Grants, events and support
The MIN Graduate Center aims to enhance the visibility of doctorate researchers' professional achievements, increase their international mobility, and to encourage outstanding international applicants to start their doctoral career at the MIN faculty in Hamburg. We therefore organize various events, provide funding programs, and offer peer-to-peer support by academic tutors. Our offers include:
- travel grants for conference and research stays abroad;
- international doctorate students meetups with talks and panel discussions;
- financial support for insight stays of international applicants in Hamburg;
- counselling services for doctoral researchers regarding their studies and daily life in Hamburg through academic tutors;
- buddy programm for new doctoral researchers.
Our events and scholarships are open to all doctoral researchers of MIN faculty.

Research in innovative, eco-friendly building materials
I work in the Wood Physics research unit of the biology department. My research is on the interaction of wood and a new type of cement: geopolymer cement, which is more eco-friendly and can be produced using 80% less carbon emissions than regular cement.
Critical Geographies of Global Inequalities - Colombia
The aim of the field research in Colombia was to carry out a broader understanding of the study site, as well as the collection of empirical information from different communities, in order to obtain an overview of the local dynamics and thus establishing the documentary basis for the development and fulfillment of the research objectives.
Protected Forest Farming in Nigeria
I got the MINGS funds to go for fieldwork in Nigeria to collect socio-economic data from Nigerian farmers and other important stakeholders needed for modeling food security in Nigeria.
Simulating the collision of particles
I started my PhD project in particle physics at Universität Hamburg in mid-2018. I’m part of the DESY Theory Group, which explores the fundamental interactions of nature and the fabric of matter, space and time.
Sustainable Urban Development in Ecuador
From January 13th to February 9th I had the opportunity to do a field research stay as part of my doctorate with the support of the MIN Graduate Center. After the scoping trip in September/October 2018, this was my second field research stay in Ecuador.
Good to know
We developed our measures to support doctoral researchers according to the results of a survey among over 900 doctoral researchers of the MIN faculty. They are continuously being adapted and further developed to offer needs-based support for doctoral researchers.
From 2015 to 2018 MINGZ was partially funded by DAAD within the framework of the “MINGZ International” project. The project aimed at creating a more productive environment for international doctoral researchers of the MIN faculty (by offering English workshops, counselling service and events), increasing the number of international doctoral researchers (by funding insight visits for facilitating the initiation of a doctoral project at the MIN faculty), and enhancing international competitiveness of German doctoral researchers through mobility scholarships. MINGZ was therefore awarded with the Best Practice award by the Club MINTernational.
