Equal Opportunity
The equal participation of women and men in all status groups is the aim of the faculty for Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences. In terms of gender mainstreaming, the perspective of equality should be taken in all decision-making processes and in all areas. The implementation of equality is under the overall supervision of the Dean’s office a task of all faculty members in cooperation with the Equal Opportunity Representative of the faculty. Further information and statistics on equality at the MIN Faculty can be found in the Equality Report.
The faculty has set itself ambitious goals in the Equal Opportunity Plan. One of them is “to realize the equal participation of women and men in the field of higher education and to use the existing skills and abilities in research and teaching”. Until an average proportion of women reaches 50% in all qualification levels (also stated in the Women’s Funding Guidelines of the Universität Hamburg from 18.12.1997), an orientation on the so-called cascade model takes place. This means that the proportion of women on a qualification level should be at least as high as the proportion on the respective lower level (for example, proportion of female doctoral students as high as proportion of female graduates in respective study program). The most important goal is to increase the proportion of female professors. The appointment commission is encouraged to use all opportunities to appoint qualified women.
The equality measures and efforts are directed at all status groups. Among other things, they include projects to arouse and encourage the enthusiasm of schoolgirls for MIN subjects. Further components are the active support and qualification of female students as well as the offer of career management services for female scientists of all career levels (doctoral students, postdocs and female professors). The faculty also supports the compatibility of career/studies and family through different information and discussion events.
The Equal Opportunity Representative and the Advisor of the faculty are available as contact persons on faculty level next to all member of the Dean’s office. They work together with the Equal Opportunity Representatives of the six departments of the MIN faculty and the Equal Opportunity Unit of the university.
