The list below presents various funding programs that can be used to finance an internship.
Funding programs
Startup Greece
Startup Greece, a non-profit organization, promotes entrepreneurship in the technology sector. Students from the University of Hamburg can gain practical experience within a network of Greek startups. The internship areas include entrepreneurship, software development, administration, and marketing.
BAföG funding for studies abroad
Funding abroad for training periods abroad with a minimum duration of twelve weeks. (Only available in German)
Applications must be submitted at least six months before the start of the planned stay abroad.
DAAD/GAES Grants
- DAAD/GAES short-term scholarships for internships abroad: Support is provided for self-organised internships abroad at organisations and institutions with a maximum duration of 3 months. (Only available in German)
Applications can be submitted up to 14 days before the start of the internship.
- RISE worldwide: Internships for Bachelor students in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, earth sciences, engineering, medicine, pharmacy or related disciplines; internships during the summer holidays.
Application from 15.10. to 30.11. each year: online registration and application. (Only available in German)
- Combined study and internship semester - DAAD: Support for a coherent stay abroad, comprising a study semester (at least 3 months) and an internship semester (at least 2 months). The practical semester must be prescribed in the curriculum of your degree programme. (Only available in German)
Application deadlines vary depending on the target region (varying between mid-July and the end of March).
- Internationalisation of teacher training "Lehramt.International": Scholarships for teacher students and graduates to do internships abroad. Students can be supported for self-organised internships of one to six months at schools abroad. Graduates can receive scholarships for six to twelve months of self-organised internships.
Applications can be submitted continuously up to four weeks before the start of the internship
FGYO (Franco-German Youth Office)
Various exchange and internship programmes in France.
Application Deadline: Depending on the program.
ERASMUS
Internship stay of at least 2 months up to 12 months in Europe.
Application deadline: at the latest 4 weeks before the start of the internship.
"Global Talent" by AIESEC
"Global Talent" by AIESEC offers the opportunity to find paid internships abroad. Suitable for students of computer science.
Registration possible at any time.
Hamburglobal (UHH)
Scholarships for stays abroad all over the world.
Application:
01.10.-31.10. for stays between 01.01. and 30.06. of the following year.
01.03.-31.03. for stays between 01.07. and 31.12. of the same year
Haniel-Stipendienprogramm
The Haniel-Stipendienprogramm supports a study period abroad of at least two semesters, combined with a multi-month internship at a business company.
Eligibility requirements: A completed degree (at least a Bachelor's), and the degree must not have been obtained more than five years prior to the application deadline.
Application deadline: October 15 (earliest start of funding: the following winter semester).
IAESTE internships
Internships in engineering and natural sciences, agriculture and forestry mediated by IAESTE (International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience).
Deadlines vary depending on the offer.
Institut Ranke-Heinemann
Internship placement in Australia and New Zealand, Down Under by the Institut Ranke-Heinemann. (Only available in German)

Summer internships in Canada
Internships for Bachelor students in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, geosciences, engineering, medicine, pharmacy or related disciplines; internship: May to September.
Application period: annually from 24.07. to 18.09.
Work and Travel in Canada
The Deutsch-Kanadische Gesellschaft is looking for young people aged 18 to 35 for its 2025 Work and Travel Program in Canada. Applications are open year-round.
