Due to the current situation, Buddy activities of the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences of Universität Hamburg will be carried out via e-mail exchange or a virtual meeting using a computer conferencing program. This means that there will be NO meeting in person until further notice.
Please regularly read the updates at: Coronavirus FAQ and its impact on Universität Hamburg.
The Buddy program of MIN Faculty aims to help newly enrolled international exchange students and program students to get a good start with their studies and everyday life in Hamburg. For this reason, we match up each international student (“Incoming Buddy”) with a current Hamburg student (“Welcome Buddy”) who can make the international student’s arrival in Hamburg easier!
As a Buddy you can...
- take part in a cultural exchange,
- get to know a new language and a new lifestyle and
- find new friends from all over the world
If you are an international student at Universität Hamburg (Incoming Buddy), please sign up here. If you are a student enrolled at the Universität Hamburg for at least 2 semesters (Welcome Buddy), sign up here.
The buddy program can be approved as one part of the CIC (Certificate Intercultural Competence). You will receive an individual certificate for extracurricular activities or voluntary work and can use it for your application for a comprehensive Certificate Intercultural Competence. For details, check the PIASTA website.
What are the responsibilities of a Welcome Buddy?
The Welcome Buddys support the Incoming Buddys for example in the following ways:
- answer questions prior to the arrival via Email
- pick them up from the airport/train station on their arrival
- help them to find their ways around Hamburg and the Campus (move in a dorm/room in a shared flat, sign the contract, open a bank account, take out an insurance, buy a phone, etc.)
- help them to register their address at the registration office
In this brochure, you find all information on first steps and to-dos in Hamburg. As a Welcome Buddy you can support your Incoming Buddy on these.
These are not your responsibilities as a Welcome Buddy:
- find accommodation for your buddy
- support the visa application process
- give information on applying and immatriculating at the Universität Hamburg
- provide information on study programs
Of course we do not expect you to support your buddy fulltime. It is for you to decide if and how much you involve your buddy into your everyday life. You will not become an advisor on general questions on study and life. Whenever you feel overstrained, do not hesitate to contact us for further support.
What can the Incoming Buddies expect?
Most of the students taking part in the Buddy Program also spent a year abroad or once came to Hamburg from abroad and know which questions you might have during your stay in Hamburg. A Welcome Buddy can support you for example in the following ways:
- answer questions prior to your arrival via Email
- pick you up from the airport/train station on you arrival
- help you to find your ways around Hamburg and the Campus (move in a dorm/room in a shared flat, sign the contract, open a bank account, to take out insurance, buy a phone, etc.)
- help you to register your address at the registration office
Please keep in mind that a Welcome Buddy cannot support you by
- finding accommodation for you
- supporting your visa application process
- prodiving information on application and immatriculation processes or on UHH study programs
Whenever you need information on the topics mentioned above, please get in touch with the PIASTA.
In this brochure, you find all information on your first steps and to-dos in Hamburg.
If you would like to improve your German you can do so in the German language courses for students enrolled at Universität Hamburg.

Incoming Buddies' evaluation
Reports by international exchange students who have previously benefitted from the buddy program offer first-hand insider information, which is especially helpful for interested exchanges students from abroad with similar plans.
"My welcome buddy is a great person. If it wasn't for her, I definitely would have had a very hard time getting around Hamburg and learning what I needed to do about paper work (administrative formalities). She treated and treats me like her sister, or a member of her family. I absolutely recommend the welcome buddy program to other students." (Mahsa, Iran)
"I am so delighted that I've registered for this program! My welcome buddy is so friendly and helpful. For example recently, I was struggling to get the residence permit because I had to get it from the Foreign Office, but no member of staff speaks English. So I had to go there several times and queue up for so long. And thanks to my Welcome buddy I could finally get it without any problems." (International student, India)
"The Buddy program is very impressive especially for non-european students who know little about the rules, regulations and cultural ethics in Hamburg. [...] This program is very helpful for international students." (Thisal, Sri Lanka)
"I had a great first experience when I landed in Germany. As I was new to the city and the country, I asked my buddy to help me to get from the airport to the place I was staying at. She happily obliged and helped me to move into the city. Next day, she took me to show around the town hall and the Alster. [...] I would recommend the Buddy Program to everyone who is coming to UHH from a different country." (Kavish, India)
