The Department of Physics and the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences at the Universität Hamburg mourn the death of Prof. Dr. Wilfried Wurth, who died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 62.

The members of the Department of Physics and the MIN Faculty are deeply affected by the sudden loss of a world-renowned scientist, university lecturer and esteemed colleague. Wilfried Wurth has been Professor of Experimental Physics at the Universität Hamburg since 2000. Since 2014, he has also been scientific director of the free-electron laser FLASH at DESY. Research with non-university partners has always been an important concern for him. He always had an integrating and motivating effect, was an open-minded conversational partner, and showed his strong connection to the department on many occasions. We mourn the loss of an esteemed and endearing colleague, superior and university lecturer. We will miss him very much.
