LOFARThe search for radio galaxies in the vast universe

The Low Frequency Array, also known as LOFAR, is an innovative digital radio telescope based in The Netherlands and spanning 6 European countries. Universität Hamburg and the University of Bielefeld also have a LOFAR receiving station in Norderstedt. In our video, Prof. Dr. Marcus Brüggen and doctoral candidate Amanda Wilber provide a glimpse into LOFAR and explain how they use it for research.

LOFAR is the first of a new generation of radio telescopes. It is used in the frequency range between ~10 MHz and ~240 MHz, a range that has not been widely researched so far. Under the aegis of Prof. Dr Marcus Brüggen, the radio astronomy group at the Hamburg Observatory uses LOFAR extensively to investigate galaxy clusters.
