Students and employees of the MIN faculty are organizing "Pint of Science" in Hamburg and taking part in the world's largest English-language festival of public science lectures for the first time.
Founded six years ago by a group of British researchers, "Pint of Science" aims to bring scientists and the public together in a relaxed atmosphere. The international, three-day festival is taking place simultaneously in all five continents, 10 countries, more than 300 cities, and with the participation of thousands of scientists. Similar to the event "Knowledge on tap", researchers will present their research in a pub to the public with a pint of beer and start exciting discussions with the audience.
“Science can often get lost in translation, leading to the spread of pseudo-science and myths. The best way to overcome this is for people to be able to talk to scientists directly in a familiar environment, such as in a pub over a pint”, says Festival co-founder Dr Motskin.
The discussions will be in English. The events have a small fee of € 2.50 per evening, tickets are available on the website.
The event starts in Hamburg on May 14, 2018, at 7 pm, in "Hadleys" (Beim Schlump 84) with a talk titled "Partnering Proteins" on the mate choice and personal preferences of proteins. The second talk, "The Science of Malware", provides information about the relationships between malware, mathematics and biology.
On May 15, 2018, at 7 pm, the event will continue in the "Cafe Bar Klick" (Glashüttenstr. 116) with „Crime prevention 4.0" on crime prevention in the age of digitization. While the second talk, "Experimental Economics for the Environment", informs how experimental economics can help to understand environmentally-friendly behavior.
In addition to the highly interdisciplinary, interactive, and exciting keynotes, both evenings will feature a number of fun, science-based activities, including live experiments and a lottery.
