Universität Hamburg strives to ensure digital accessibility for people with disabilities. Our goal is to provide a fully accessible website in keeping with the provisions of the Hamburg regulation on establishing accessible information technology for people with disabilities (Hamburgische Barrierefreie Informationstechnik-Verordnung, HmbBITVO) dated 10 September 2019.

Current compliance

The accessibility requirements come from §1 HmbBITVO in conjunction with §3 subsections 1--4 and §4 of the federal accessible information technology regulation (Barrierefreie Informationstechnik-Verordnung, BITV), adopted on the basis of §11 of the Hamburg act on equal treatment for disabled persons (Hamburgisches Behindertengleichstellungsgesetz, HmbBGG).

The Verification of compliance with the requirements is based on the regular self-assessments carried out by the Digitalisation in Teaching team of the MIN Faculty Dean's Office at Universität Hamburg.

According to this evaluation, the website is partially compliant due to the following inconsistencies and exceptions. In many areas, the website is very accessible for all users. However, as it currently stands, the website is not entirely BITV compliant. The requirements will be gradually implemented on the website as part of technical revisions.

Non-accessible content

1. PDF, Word, Excel, or PowerPoint documents provided for download on the website are not all currently available in an accessible version, but will continue to be systematically processed. Newly uploaded files should be created in an accessible version or replaced by such a version as soon as possible. In general, the University pursues the strategy of reducing the number of documents overall and increasing use of accessible implementations in the form of websites or web forms.
2. Video and audio files embedded on our web pages are currently only partially available with subtitles, audio descriptions, or transcripts. We endeavour to add subtitles to newly uploaded videos as soon as possible after publication.

Arbitration procedure

If you are unable to find a satisfactory solution, even after providing feedback to the address provided above, you may contact the ombudsperson's office provided for in §13a HmbBGG (German: Schlichtungsstelle HmbBGG). This ombudsperson is tasked with fostering an extrajudicial resolution for conflicts between persons with a disability and public offices. The arbitration procedure is free. Legal counsel is not required.
