Research funding / grants
Canon Research Fellowships (Japan)
Interdisciplinary funding of a 3 to 12 month research stay in Japan.
Application deadline: 15. September.
Heidelberg Laureate Forum
The Heidelberg Laureate Forum invites young researchers in mathematics and computer science to apply from November 11, 2024, to February 11, 2025. Eligible participants include Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD students, and postdocs (PhD obtained within the last 5 years, with an extension for parental leave).
Evonik Stiftung
The Evonik Stiftung supports scientific theses (Master's theses, PhD theses, postdocs) in the fields of chemistry and related disciplines with financial support. Applications are welcome for projects in digital chemistry and amino acid research. The application process consists of several phases, starting with the submission of a brief project summary by February 15, 2025.
DAAD-Funding
- Scholarship database of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD / GAES): only available in German
- Short and long-term lectureships: Mediation and/or support for lectureships for Germans abroad: only availabe in German.
4 selection meetings annually; Applications have to be submitted 10 weeks before the meetings are held.
- GEnKO - German-Korean-Partnership Programme (DAAD): Funding of research stays in South Korea: only available in German.

DFG-Funding
- Research fellowships for Postdocs supported by "Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft" at a location of your choice, as a rule up to 2 years.
Proposals may be submitted at any time.
- Initiation of International Collaborationn: "Exploratory Workshops“, "Trips Abroad" and "Guest Visits“, for a maximum of 12 months, for researchers who have already achieved their doctorates.
Proposals may be submitted at any time, at least 3 months in advance.
- Max-Kade-Foundation Fellowship Programme: Funding of a one-year research stay in the USA for early career researchers (generally within 12 years of obtaining their doctorate) from the fields of natural sciences and medicide.

Feodor-Lynen Research Grant by Alexander-von-Humboldt-Stiftung
Sponsorship for worldwide research stays: 6 to 24 months for PostDocs and 6 to 18 months for experienced researchers. The applicants can choose an academic host from the Humboldt-network.
Application is possible at any time. The selection committee meets in February, June and October.
Fulbright Grants
Travel grants for professors, lecturers and early career researchers, planning to spend a period of at least three months researching or teaching at a scientific institution in the USA.
Application at least 6 months prior to departure to the USA.
HIAS - Hamburg Institute for Advanced Study
HIAS supports scholars in their own research projects on-site in Hamburg.
JSPS research grants for PostDocs (Japan)
- JSPS research fellowships (Standard): Fellowships and research stays in Japan lasting between 1 and 24 months.
Application is possible at any time. The selection committee meets in February, June and October.
- JSPS research fellowships (Short Term): Fellowships for short term research stays at universities and institutions in Japan. Length of stay for doctoral candidates 1 to 12 months, for Postdocs 1 to 6 months. (Only available in German)

Leopoldina-PostDoc-Sholarship
Individual full scholarship for a 1- to 3-year research stay at a host institution abroad. Application is possible up to 7 years after the doctorate.

Liebig Grant for PhD chemists and early career researchers
The Liebig-Fellowship aims to support PhD chemists to acquire further science qualification at university level. At the date of application no more than 3 years should have passed after obtaining a PhD.

MOST Research Grants (Taiwan)
Fellowship of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST, Taiwan) for a self-chosen research project (3 to 12 months) in Taiwan. Up to two fellowships are granted annually.

Individual research support of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions for researchers at all stages of their careers.

The French Embassy in Germany awards mobility grants to doctoral students, post-doctoral students and young researchers working in Germany for a research stay in a laboratory or research institute in France.

Travel Grants and Corporate Funds (UHH)
(Young) researchers and students at the UHH can apply for travel subsidy for research purposes or attendance at conferences through the University's Foundations and Corporate Capital.
