Please note the following date change: The first selection in 2023 will not take place at the end of February 2023 as usual, but on March 15, 2023. We will do our best to allow the earliest possible scholarship start date of April 1, 2023 anyway.
Program Objective
The aim of the program is to carry out a research project of one's own choice abroad, thereby gaining an important qualification step for a later career in science, business or the cultural sector.
Who can apply?
Scientists with above-average qualifications from all disciplines who have completed their doctorate with very good results before starting the fellowship are eligible to apply.
Under certain conditions, persons with foreign citizenship may also be included in the funding measures. Eligible for application are persons who have the same status as Germans according to § 8 para. 1 number 2ff, para. 2, para. 2a and para. 3 BAföG. What is funded?
Funding is available for research stays in all disciplines at a host institute of your choice abroad.
Participation in courses, workshops or similar is not funded.
Within the funding period, stays in several countries or in several scientific institutions within one country are also possible. Please indicate all planned "target institutions" in the application form.
Duration of funding
Three to six months.
The fellowship is not renewable.
Scholarship Benefits
Monthly basic amount for accommodation, meals and incidental expenses of 1,750 euros
International supplement plus purchasing power allowance (varies according to host country and location), which increases if accompanied by family and depending on the number of children. Example for USA, Boston:
-1.323 Euro single
-1,852 Euro with spouse or registered domestic partner
(These are non-binding calculation examples; changes may result from purchasing power equalization developments)
Child allowance for children under 18 (monthly 400 euros for the first child and 100 euros for each additional child)
Childcare: If accompanied by children under the age of 12, the monthly childcare costs can be covered up to the amount of the basic scholarship amount.
Allowance for material costs in the amount of 250 euros per scholarship month for the purchase of specialist books, attendance at specialist congresses, etc.
Travel allowance for travel from home to the host institute and back.
Subsidy for costs of congress attendance, which are related to the research project of the scholarship holder (on application).
