Hamadohri Environmental Radiation Measurements International School 2026

University of Osaka - July 2026

Hamadohri School focuses on the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011, particularly the nuclear accident and its impact. Students explore the disaster, evacuation, reconstruction, and current situation from natural and social scientific perspectives.

Through visits to affected areas, students have measured radiation levels, learned about its biological effects, and heared directly from local residents about their experiences. They then discussed the challenges of evacuation, community disruption, discrimination, and harmful rumors, while developing their own ideas about disaster response, reconstruction, energy policy, and Japan’s future.

Philipp Maximilian Ulmen, PhD researcher in Physics, and Tim Fiebig, Geography student at the University of Hamburg, were selected by Osaka University to participate in the “Hamadohri Environmental Radiation Measurements International School 2026”.

This year, for the second time, the International Office of the University of Hamburg financially supported both participants with travel and program-related expenses. Osaka University covered the local expenses.

The MIN Faculty and the University of Hamburg would like to thank Prof. Nomachi for his valuable support in making this program possible.

HNC³ – Hamburg Network on Compliance in Cooperation with China

On January 15, 2026, the workshop HNC³ – Hamburg Network on Compliance in Cooperation with China took place, in which the MIN’s International Affairs Advisor participated.

The aim of this training workshop is to familiarize participants from academia and administration with the topic of compliance in its various forms. The interdisciplinary exchange is intended to foster mutual understanding and, ultimately, greater confidence in dealing with these issues.

The MIN faculty participated in the central information event for prospective international students.

  • Objective: To raise awareness of UHH as a place to study and to provide information and guidance on study options and the application process (virtual Open Day).
  • Target group: Prospective international students (BA & MA, English- and German-taught degree programs).
  • Date: January 8, 2026
  • Duration: 3 hours, 1–4 p.m. (scheduled to be feasible for as many countries as possible)
  • Language: English
  • Communication channels: via DAAD, social media, newsletters, etc. (to be determined with Anna Fischer), as well as outreach to German schools abroad – with registration required.
