The accelerator physicist Andreas Maier was honored for his outstanding achievements at the spring conference of the German Physical Society (DPG) in Würzburg. On March 21, the DPG working group Accelerator Physics awarded him with the DPG Young Scientist Prize for Accelerator Physics.
Andreas Maier is an accelerator physicist at the University of Hamburg and, within the framework of the LAOLA cooperation between the University and DESY, is managing the LUX facility to investigate a new technique of plasma acceleration that will enable even smaller and stronger particle accelerators and thus completely new applications.
Andreas Maier received the "Young Scientist Award" in recognition of his outstanding scientific achievements in the further development of the laser-driven wave-wave acceleration in plasmas as part of his PhD and first research phase, "the committee emphasized." His research includes cutting-edge and innovative ideas for further improving this acceleration technology and is aimed at the first-time realization of a free-electron laser with laser-plasma-accelerated electrons." In particular, Maier demonstrated with his system a hitherto unparalleled long-term stability and reliability in this type of accelerator, explained the committee. "His activities promise further outstanding research results in the near future."
