About the MIN faculty
The Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences (MIN) comprises the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Informatics, Mathematics, and Physics.
Around 8,500 students, of which 1,800 are doctoral students and 1,800 trainee teachers, are taught and supervised by some 200 professors and 370 postdoctoral research assistants.
In recent years, the MIN Faculty has earned an outstanding reputation for research and teaching.
Four Clusters of Excellence and external funding totaling €47.5 million in 2012 reflect the Faculty’s development and enable, in cooperation with external research institutions, a combination of basic and interdisciplinary research on topics of relevance to society. Research centers have grown from the federal Clusters of Excellence to enhance Universität Hamburg’s international competitiveness in the natural sciences.
With its bachelor’s programs at full capacity, the MIN Faculty helps to mitigate the shortage of qualified specialists in the mathematics, informatics, natural science, and technology (MINT) professions. Programs are subject to continuous reform measures. In collaboration with students, the Faculty has pioneered significant changes such as greater independence in the organization of studies, the abolition of deadline regulations, and greater flexibility and choice in the selection of subject combinations.
The MIN Faculty has set off along a common path – and the steps taken so far attest to our potential. We would like current discussion on the structural developments and conditions at Universität Hamburg to be pursued with a view towards high-quality research and teaching.
This can only strengthen the University and the MIN Faculty.
