Delegation from Macquarie University Visits the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences (MIN) and the University of Hamburg
05.11.2025
In March 2023, a delegation from Macquarie University in Sydney, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor S. Bruce Dowton, visited the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences. In discussions with Dean Professor Norbert Ritter and Vice Dean Professor Kai Jensen, both sides explored opportunities to further strengthen collaboration between the respective disciplines, with a particular focus on supporting early-career researchers.
To continue and expand this strategic partnership, the University of Hamburg welcomed another delegation from Macquarie University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering on 5 November 2025. The delegation included Professor Sam Muller, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, and Professor Alex Fuerbach, Associate Dean for Research Training and Performance. In the morning, the guests visited the University Observatory, where discussions centered on enhancing cooperation in the field of joint doctoral programs.
In the afternoon, an exchange took place at the MIN Dean’s Office, where participants reviewed existing collaborations and explored future partnership opportunities. During discussions between representatives of Macquarie University and Professors Wolfgang Hillert, Christoph Schweigert, Jutta Schneider, and Marielle Herberstein, key areas for future cooperation were identified, reaffirming the long-term commitment of both institutions to advancing joint research and academic collaboration. Professor Christoph Schweigert visited Macquarie University last year. Professors Jutta Schneider and Mariella Herberstein have already jointly supervised three PhD students within the framework of a Cotutelle agreement with Macquarie University, describing the program as mutually enriching for both institutions in the fields of research and scholarship. To date, the MIN Faculty has successfully completed ten joint PhD degrees.
The MIN Dean’s Office extends its sincere thanks for the visit and looks forward to continuing the successful cooperation with Macquarie University.
